The Propylaeum

Propylaeum (Entrance)

Imagine, if you will, that you are in Ancient Rome...

It has been a busy day for me, Iulius Claudius Antonius, patrician senator. I've spent the day paying off senators and tribunes of the plebs so they will do my bidding in the senate. Now I am in my domus seeing clients.

Prosperous senators and VIPs in ancient Rome had "clients" which were free or freed men, but not necessarily citizens of Rome. These clients pledged themselves to these senators as "patrons". The client served the interests of his patron and in return he received favors, money, a job, or some other kind of assistance. This relationship was solemn and binding and adhered to as a matter of honor.
